D-backs reinstate C Avila from IL, option INF Vargas to Triple-A Reno

The Arizona Diamondbacks have reinstated catcher Alex Avila from the injured list and have optioned infielder Ildemaro Vargas to Triple-A Reno, the team announced in a press release.

Avila has been out since April 5 after straining his left quadriceps against the Boston Red Sox.

The 32-year-old catcher has only had 15 at-bats on the year, but his five hits (.333 average) include a double and two home runs to go along with five RBI in six games for Arizona.

Vargas has only been able to muster three doubles and one home run in 26 appearances for the D-backs this season.

The 27-year-old is hitting an even .200 (11-for-55) and has four RBI and one stolen base on his 2019 campaign.

Vargas started Friday’s game at third base and went hitless in three at-bats before being replaced by Eduardo Escobar.

Arizona, which has typically carried three catchers on the 25-man roster under Lovullo, was currently carrying two catchers. Caleb Joseph was recently optioned to Reno, although outfielder Blake Swihart has caught previously with the Boston Red Sox.

The D-backs (22-17) and Braves continue their four-game series on Saturday at 5:10 p.m.
